Top 10 JOLCO Arrangers in 2026: Banks and Structurers Behind Japanese Operating Leases
Who arranges JOLCO aircraft financings? A guide to 10 banks and structurers, including MUFG, SMBC, Mizuho, HSBC and BBAM/NBB, with recent deals, what each does in the structure, and how airlines should choose an arranger.
The banks and structurers that put Japanese investors, lenders and airlines into the same aircraft deal
A Japanese Operating Lease with Call Option (JOLCO) is only as good as the team that structures it. The arranger finds the equity investors, lines up the debt, builds the special purpose vehicle and keeps the airline's call option, tax assumptions and documentation consistent. This guide lists ten firms that act as JOLCO arrangers, structurers or debt providers, with recent examples where public.
How a JOLCO arranger earns its fee
Japanese equity investors and banks fund a lease vehicle that buys the aircraft. The vehicle leases it to the airline, which holds a call option to buy the aircraft at a pre-agreed price at the end of the term. The arranger sits in the middle of that structure and coordinates every party.
MUFG
MUFG was sole structuring agent and lender on Viva Aerobus's first JOLCO, an Airbus A321neo delivered in May 2026, with Three i's Capital acting as equity underwriter. MUFG announced the transaction on June 29, 2026.
SMBC Group (SMBC, SMFL and SMBC Aviation Capital)
SMBC has done JOLCO work since 2005, when it provided debt for Xiamen Airlines. In the group's own description, Sumitomo Mitsui Finance & Leasing underwrites JOLCO equity and places it with tax investors, Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation provides the debt, and SMBC Aviation Capital works with the airline and manages the aircraft for the investment vehicle. SMBC Aviation Capital describes the roles in its JOLCO overview.
HSBC
HSBC arranged the JOLCO financing for five of Emirates' six new Airbus A350-900s, with the sixth in progress, marking the airline's return to the JOLCO market after six years. Gulf News reported the deal in November 2025.
BBAM and Nomura Babcock & Brown (NBB)
For British Airways' 2019 financing of six A350-1000s and two A320neos, BBAM structured the JOLCO element and acts as structuring agent for NBB and the JOLCO equity investors, while NBB co-arranged the JOLCO equity. The JOLCO sat alongside an EETC debt transaction in a package of about $1.12 billion. The ADS Group summarised the closing.
Mizuho Leasing and Mizuho Bank
The Mizuho group is a long-standing participant in Japanese aircraft leasing, combining lease origination with bank debt. It regularly appears on JOLCO transactions for Asian, European and Latin American carriers.
Tokyo Century

Crédit Agricole CIB
Crédit Agricole CIB is a long-time aircraft finance bank and a frequent arranger of JOLCO debt and structuring for European, Middle Eastern and Asian airlines.
Natixis
Natixis has a sizeable aviation finance franchise and is active in structured lease financings, including JOLCO-style transactions alongside Japanese equity partners.
BNP Paribas
BNP Paribas is a regular participant in aircraft debt syndicates and Japanese lease structures, often acting alongside Japanese equity arrangers.
Independent aviation finance advisers
Where an airline does not want to rely on a single bank's pricing, an independent adviser can run a competitive process and compare proposals from several arrangers. See the top 10 aviation finance boutiques and how to compare aviation finance advisory firms.
How to choose a JOLCO arranger
- Investor access: ask how many Japanese equity investors the arranger can place with, and how recently.
- Debt and equity together: a single bank providing both simplifies execution, but a competitive process can improve pricing.
- Jurisdiction experience: India's first JOLCO was reported in March 2026, after new aircraft-object protection rules. Vinod Kothari describes the structure. Local legal readiness matters.
- Call option and tax terms: the purchase option price and the lease term drive the economics, so model them early.

JOLCO arranger FAQ
What does a JOLCO arranger do?
It structures the transaction, finds Japanese equity investors, arranges or provides the debt, sets up the lease vehicle and coordinates documentation between the airline, lenders and investors.
Why do airlines use JOLCO?
Japanese investors' tax benefits can lower the airline's effective financing cost, and the call option gives the airline a route to ownership at the end of the lease.
Is a JOLCO only for new aircraft?
Most deals are for new deliveries, but existing aircraft can be refinanced in some cases. Terms depend on age, type and the investor appetite for the asset.
