787-9 Wet Lease Demand Is Surging: Where Airlines Find Dreamliner Capacity and What to Negotiate

A 787-9 wet lease gives an airline a long-haul Dreamliner with crew, maintenance and insurance, billed per block hour, without waiting years for a delivery slot. It is now the fastest-growing type in the ACMI market: ch-aviation data shows 787-9 ACMI flight hours rose 426.1% year on year in Q2 2026, lifting the type from 19th to 9th place among ACMI variants.

What you get

What a 787-9 wet lease covers

  • Aircraft: a 787-9, typically in a two- or three-class long-haul layout, operated on the lessor's AOC.
  • Crew: 787-rated flight crew and cabin crew, including the augmented crew sets needed for ultra-long sectors.
  • Maintenance and insurance: line and base maintenance plus hull and liability cover, carried by the lessor.
  • Pricing: a block-hour rate against a monthly minimum guarantee. Fuel, handling, landing and overflight charges stay with the airline.
ACMIWorld view: The IndiGo programme shows why exit terms matter. IndiGo handed back one of its six Norse 787s early after closing a Manchester route, and the wider deal ended in July 2026. Lessees should price early-return rights; providers should secure termination fees.
